An Egyptian Soldier killed in an exchange of Fire with Israeli Forces at the Rafah Crossing

An Egyptian soldier was killed in a shootout between Israeli and Egyptian forces near the Rafah border crossing in the southern Gaza Strip, and an investigation is ongoing, an Egyptian army spokesman said.

The Israeli military previously said it was investigating reports of an exchange of fire between Israeli and Egyptian soldiers.

“A few hours ago (Monday), there was a shooting on the Egyptian border. The incident is being determined and talks are being held with the Egyptians,” the Israeli army said in a statement.

Israel seized control of the Rafah border crossing on the Gaza side of the border earlier this month as it stepped up its military offensive in the area, drawing criticism from Egypt.

The incident followed Israeli attacks on Rafah on Sunday, where thousands of displaced Palestinians have taken refuge fleeing clashes in other parts of the besieged territory.

According to the latest information, 45 people were killed in those attacks, when tents with displaced Palestinians were hit.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza stated that most of the dead were women and children.

An unnamed Israeli military source condemned Egypt on Monday for the deadly exchange of fire at the border. There was no official comment from Cairo.
