An increasing number of health workers leave the Una-Sana canton year after year. There are more and more people who study only to leave, but also those who go to school not to return. One of the most common problems faced by young doctors is the inability to specialize in this canton, and a similar situation is currently in the Health Center in Bosanska Krupa.
The lack of doctors or only one in the clinic is a picture that can be seen in the Health Center in Bosanska Krupa. Regional clinics are empty, so all patients from surrounding towns often have to travel twenty kilometers to the first health center.
“We need a doctor, everyone needs a doctor, not just an individual, and to be a permanent doctor in Jezerski, and they don’t give us a doctor.” Sometimes he comes to work – sometimes he doesn’t,” says Muharem Nesimović from Jezerski.
“We are waiting for transport, we are coming from Mahmić Selo. I was there a week ago, the children didn’t go to school, I had to go somewhere to spend the night, I didn’t have to go home as soon as possible. It’s another matter who is here from Krupa, it’s close to him, it’s far from Mahmić, and now there isn’t even a doctor,” Hanča Tajić tells.
Doctor Emira Eljazović often works in several outpatient clinics, and patients are forced to wait until she returns to the outpatient clinic where they are. She says she doesn’t care that the patients are waiting.
“Colleagues and I, when it’s a day like this, a situation like this, we cover more outpatient clinics, more family medicine teams, emergency medical care and pediatrics, so, basically, we lack 4-5 doctors, so we need to balance it all.”
According to the director of the Bosanska Krupa Health Center dr. Zlatan Terzić, one of the pressing problems is that they often cannot offer specialization to their young doctors in this canton, so he understands why they leave. But the problem is being solved.
“A large number of doctors come to us, we have to understand in USK that we are smaller places and people want to work for a certain time and want specializations, if you don’t offer them specialization and promise something – they leave. We currently do not have a doctor for Jezersko and Mahmić Selo, but from tomorrow we will start introducing a permanent doctor”, he said.
The story of the collapse of the health system in the Una-Sana Canton is not new. Despite the fact that the management of this hospital is working on solving the problem as soon as possible and offering better working conditions to its employees, they have a clear attitude – they cannot fight this problem alone.
