Analyst: Postponing the Vote on the UN Resolution is not bad for two Reasons

Former diplomat and journalist Hajrudin Somun spoke about the possible reasons for delaying the vote in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on the resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica.

“The reason why it was postponed was stated quite clearly in the statement of the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) mission to the UN. On the one hand, it is not bad that it is being postponed, to let the euphoria on one side of BiH subside a little, and on the other, the aggressive threat of its further destabilization. Even in the market, people ask me, worried, ‘Will they attack us again?’‘said Somun.

He added that, on the other hand, it is good that it was postponed, not only to eliminate any ambiguities in the resolution, but to add more UN members to the list of sponsors and those countries that support the resolution.

“This is exactly what some Iranian friends claim to me, referring to the announcement of the BiH ambassador at the UN headquarters, as well as the very fact that was not pointed out in Sarajevo, that this topic had not yet been included in the agenda of the session of the General Assembly, but that it was the opinion of the proposer of the resolution,” said Somun.

He pointed out that the confusion about Iran’s position arose after the statement of the Iranian ambassador in Belgrade, which he considers to be unclear and hasty.

“It is possible that the ambassador received something from Tehran that was an announcement of a possible postponement of the vote. This was interpreted from his interpretation as if Iran was against the resolution itself, which would make official Belgrade happy. My Iranian friend still thinks that their ambassador in Serbia may not have understood the verdict of theInternational Court of Justice in The Hague on the genocide in Srebrenica, and doubts about the postponement were removed after the announcement from the BiH embassy in the UN,” said Somun.

In the end, he points out that he does not rule out Serbia’s attempts to bring Iran to the side of several opponents of the resolution on Srebrenica, given the new geopolitical alignments in the world, in which Moscow sees the theocratic system of the Islamic Republic of Iran as one of the pillars of the anti-American and anti-Western grouping, Klix.ba reports.
