The Government of Sarajevo Canton adopted conclusions approving the continuation of the SPARTA project for theinstallation of license plate recognition and acquisition systems, as well as the expansion of radar systems with next-generation radars at additional locations in Sarajevo Canton.

Reports for both projects confirmed the validity of the initiatives aimed at improving road user safety. The reports also confirmed more efficient, economical, and enhanced police performance.

In 2025, 44 additional analytical cameras for license plate recognition and acquisition were installed in Sarajevo Canton. These cameras can identify stolen vehicles, and help solvevarious criminal offenses. The project began in 2017 with the installation of the first two ANPR cameras, and today there are a total of 101 ANPR cameras in Sarajevo Canton. The photographs recorded by these cameras are in high resolution. The cameras, both during the day and at night, capture high-resolution images of vehicles and drivers who committed offenses.

“Before the introduction of ANPR cameras, the number of stolen vehicles in Sarajevo Canton was around 600 annually. Today this number has decreased by over 90%. These cameras have also made significant contribution to solving other criminal offenses recorded in various parts of the city. This is why we aim to install them in as many locations as possible,” explained Minister Katica. Speaking about another project related to the expansion of radar systems, he recalled that in 2024 a decision was made to ‘cover’ the main city road with radars.

“Radar controls and the confiscation of vehicles from multipleoffenders have proven to be the most effective measures in combating traffic offenses. In 2024, it was decided to install radars along the main city road, from Ilidža to Baščaršija and in the opposite direction. Due to difficulties in implementing public procurement procedures, this project was not realized and will be resumed in 2026,” explained Minister Katica, adding that the Police, from mid- 2023 to the end of 2025, confiscated over 450 vehicles from multiple offenders.

The Government of Sarajevo Canton has tasked the Police Administration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of SarajevoCanton with the implementation of these projects. They will conduct public procurements in accordance with the Law on Public Procurement.
