Several cities in Sweden held gatherings to commemorate the genocide in Srebrenica.
Events were organized in Stockholm (central event), Eskilstun, Flen, Falkenberg, Gävle, Lulea, Kristinehamn, Orebro and organizers were local anti-racist organizations gathered around Tillsammansskapet group.
Event organizer in Flen Therese Andersson, a member of the local antiracist initiative “Tillsammans and Flen” (Together in Flen), told FENA that on Friday they want to attract public attention to the genocide that occurred in Srebrenica on July 11, 1995.
“Political situation in Sweden and throughout Europe is similar to what it was in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. Extreme right-wing and nationalist parties are gaining more and more space in politics, which we consider very disturbing. The last time this has happened, it ended with genocide,” says Andersson.
Her organization has been active for two years and they are organizing activities and campaigns in an attempt to integrate people who have left their countries and came in Flen, and to try to make them feel part of the Swedish society.
“We want to show people that it is possible to live together, even though we are different,” stressed Andersson.
She points out that they want people to understand the consequences of such behavior.
“We want people to understand that they can live together even despite the fact that they come from different places. We want people to understand what has happened the last time when nationalist parties came to power and help them to learn more about the genocide in Srebrenica. We must never forget Srebrenica,” said Andresson.
