anesaAnesa Kajtazović (24) recently became the Mayor of Waterloo, Iowa. She beat her opponent from the Republican Party John Rooff.

Anesa arrived to the US in 1997 with her sisters and parents, after spending more than four years in various refugee camps in Southern Europe.

While the parents worked hard in order to feed their family, Anesa, even though she did not speak English well, began to go to school and received a diploma as a specialist for public and business administration at the University of Northern Iowa. She also graduated from Waterloo West High School.

Anesa beat Rooff with 59 percent of the votes. Since there is a significant BiH population in Waterloo, her win was celebrated for several days.
