Artificial Intelligence divided Mostar

The poster that caused new divisions in Mostar was created with the help of artificial intelligence, the Faculty of Philosophy in this city announced after numerous, mostly negative reactions about how the illustration omitted mosques and added what looks like church towers, which, namely, do not exist in the old part of the city.

It is a poster that invites to the summer school of political science methodology on new trends and issues, on which the most recognizable, probably the most photographed part of Mostar, which has been protected by UNESCO, together with the Old Bridge, is shown.

“The poster of the summer school organized by the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Mostar and IPSA (International Political Science Association), which was generated by an artificial intelligence program with the central motif of the symbol of the city of Mostar – the Old Bridge, caused hysteria in part of the media and politics in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Completely benign, and IPSA-approved depiction of the Old Bridge caused hatred, threats, misinformation and defamation of the Faculty of Philosophy, but also of the University of Mostar,” said the Faculty of Philosophy.

This institution also says that they have received numerous threats which they have reported to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton.

“Especially discouraging are the huge amounts of outpouring of hatred, both from some media and political workers, as well as from citizens expressed in comments on various media portals. Among these comments are those calling for the demolition and destruction of the Faculty of Philosophy and the University of Mostar as the only public university in the Croatian language in BiH“, they state in the statement.

The Ministry requests that the Faculty remove the poster

“The Ministry condemns the action of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Mostar, which published on its official website a promotional poster for the first summer school on the methodology of political science organized together with IPSA, in which the minarets of the mosques located behind the Old Bridge were replaced by non-existent buildings,” it is stated in the statement of the Ministry.

‘Illustration made so that mosques are not shown

Historian Dragan Markovina explained that the illustration was created deliberately so that the mosques in the old part of the city are not visible.

The illustration for the poster shows what appears to be a view of the Old Bridge from the north side, from which the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, one of the most visited mosques in BiH, cannot be seen, but the mosques on the other side of the Neretva should be visible, Slobodna Evropa writes.
