“Brčko authorities need to expedite administrative processes to maintain project momentum and uphold effective cooperation with international partners,” the Principal Deputy High Representative and Brčko Supervisor Jonathan Mennuti said today during a visit to Brčko together with Head of the EBRD Office in BiH Manuela Naessl. Mennuti and Naessl met with the Brčko Government to address ongoing infrastructure initiatives and urgently needed steps to alleviate delays and ensure the progress of infrastructure projects.

The focal point of the discussions was the issuance of construction permits and other administrative procedures crucial for the successful completion of the Brčko Port modernization project. This project holds significant importance not only for Brčko but for the entire country. Members of the government responsible for these procedures committed to the Supervisor and Ms. Naessl to quick resolution of outstanding issues. “I am gratified officials took responsibility for executing their duties. Accountability to the people of Brčko and the District’s international partners is vital and must be improved,“ commented the Supervisor.

Additionally, the meeting touched upon Brčko’s potential and perspectives for renewable energy initiatives and improving electricity distribution, aiming to advance the District towards lasting energy sustainability in the future. It was emphasized that swift decisions on these fronts are essential for continued good cooperation with international partners and to accelerate the sustainable transition.

In a separate meeting with the representatives of the executive and legislative authority, Supervisor Mennuti further discussed worrying delays and challenges regarding the implementation of good governance reforms, investment initiatives, responsible budget planning, and the fight against corruption. “Even though 2024 is an election year, Brčko authorities must enhance project efficiency and expedite administrative procedures to avoid unnecessary setbacks and remain focused on public administration reform and the fight against corruption.

Sustained progress is imperative if the authorities are truly dedicated to fully utilizing the District’s potential to deliver shared prosperity to all Brčko citizens,” concluded the Supervisor.
