The celebration of the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina began on Sarajevo’s Mount Hum with the raising of the state flag and the playing of the national anthem.
On behalf of the City of Sarajevo, Mayor Samir Avdić, together with Deputy Mayors Mirela Džehverović and Predrag Puharić, Chairman of the City Council Alen Girt, Deputy Chairpersons Svjetlana Šošić and Emir Bićo, and city councilors, paid tribute by visiting memorial sites and honoring the martyrs and fallen soldiers who gave their lives in the foundation of an independent and sovereign Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“The City of Sarajevo continues to cherish the values of an independent and sovereign Bosnia and Herzegovina, with faith in an even stronger, more stable, and more prosperous future,” Mayor Avdić stated, congratulating March 1 to all citizens of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
At the same time, with sorrow and respect, we remember all innocent victims, especially our youngest fellow citizens.
The City of Sarajevo delegation laid flowers at the Kovači cemetery – at the Memorial to the Bosnian Martyrs and the grave of the first President of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović. Flowers were also laid at the Eternal Flame memorial, the Memorial to the Murdered Children of Besieged Sarajevo 1992–1995, the memorial to the murdered police officers in Veliki Park, the Vraca Memorial Park, and the memorial in front of the Novi Grad Sarajevo Municipality, the City of Sarajevo Public Relations Department announced.
