As of today, November 1, a decision by the Deposit Insurance Agency of BiH comes into effect, increasing the insured deposit limit in banks in BiH from 70,000 KM to 100,000 BAM.
The decision was adopted by the Agency’s Board of Directors during a meeting held on September 23 in Sarajevo. Up to this amount, the Agency will reimburse a depositor should their bank’s operating license be revoked.
According to the Agency’s rules, the amount is calculated per depositor, per bank – including accrued interest – and is reduced by any debt the depositor may owe to that bank. Funds held in foreign currencies are converted into BAM based on the Central Bank of BiH exchange rate as of the date the license is revoked. For joint accounts, the balance is divided equally among the account holders, unless evidence to the contrary is provided.
The Agency states that this decision offers depositors a higher level of protection, helps strengthen confidence in the banking sector, and contributes to the country’s financial stability. This increase, they note, represents a further step toward aligning BiH with European Union standards and directives regarding deposit protection.
During the meeting, it was noted that the domestic banking sector is stable, well-capitalized, highly liquid, and profitable.
The Board of Directors also decided that the premium rate to be paid by banks for 2027 will remain unchanged from this year’s level, at 0.26 percent annually.
