The Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Bećirović, addressed today in a video message, as part of the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995, which is being celebrated for the first time at the United Nations (UN) in New York.

He thanked the UN General Assembly for adopting the Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica and all the member states that voted for truth and justice, reminding that the final judgments of the UN’s highest courts confirmed that genocide was committed against Bosniaks in the UN safe zone of Srebrenica.

Bećirović pointed out that these are court verdicts that cannot be erased from the history of the UN and humanity, and that the institutional protection of the legacy of UN tribunals and courts protects the democratic values and fundamental principles on which the UN rests.

“With the adoption of the Resolution, an important message was sent to humanity. The UN must not forget the final verdicts of its courts on the genocides committed in Rwanda and Srebrenica. Those verdicts should be a constant warning to humanity and we must all fight together so that genocide is never repeated, anywhere and to anyone. “, said Bećirović.

He stated that the UN General Assembly supported the established legal facts and voted for strengthening the culture of peace and encouraging justice, for the reconciliation process in the region, for condemning the glorification of war criminals, preventing genocide, for affirming the culture of memory, for dialogue and building an inclusive society. , for opposition to policies and ideologies that lead to genocide and for educational systems that will be in the function of genocide prevention.

“As the chairman of the BiH Presidency, I want to emphasize that war criminals must not hide behind entire nations. The resolution is a new chance for catharsis and a civilizational clearing-up with those responsible for genocide. The genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica, in the heart of Europe, must not be forgotten and denied. We preserve the dignity of the victims and fight for a safe future for new generations,” said Bećirović.

The commemoration in the UN General Assembly was organized with the co-sponsorship of the permanent missions to the UN of Albania, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malaysia. , the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Rwanda, Slovenia, Sweden and Turkey.
