Two Suspects Charged In Connection With The Louvre Robbery

Indictments against two new suspects were filed on Saturday as part of the investigation into the robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris that took place last month, said Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau.

According to her, a 37-year-old man has been charged with participating in theft by an organized group and criminal conspiracy, while a 38-year-old woman has been charged as an accomplice. Both suspects have been detained and denied any involvement in the crime. Details of the case have not yet been released.

On that day, October 19th, jewelry worth 88 million euros was stolen from the Louvre, one of the most visited museums in the world.

The suspects who were charged on Saturday are among five people arrested on Wednesday as part of the investigation. Three other suspects were released without charges, the prosecutor added.

Two men who were previously detained have already been charged with theft and criminal conspiracy in connection with the Louvre robbery, after they, according to officials, partially admitted involvement in the crime. The two suspects, in their 30s, come from the northeastern Paris suburb of Aubervilliers. One of them is an Algerian who had booked a return ticket to his country and was arrested at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. The other is a French national who was previously convicted of theft in 2008 and 2014, and his trial is scheduled for November.

Lawyer Adrien Sorrentino, who represents the 38-year-old woman, stated that his client is “devastated” and denies the charges. “She does not understand how she is involved in any of the elements she is accused of,” the lawyer said.

Beccuau added that the investigation confirms that at least four thieves participated in the robbery, but that there is a possibility that other people were also involved in the crime, including the possibility that the robbery was commissioned by a buyer. The stolen jewels have not yet been found.
