At the session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, which will be held at the beginning of December this year, the proposal for the inclusion of the Nevesinje Olympic Games in the Register of Best Preservation Practices will be considered, as well as the serial nomination of the Lipizzan Horse Breeding Tradition, in which Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is also included,” as it was found out from the State Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO.
BiH is rich in numerous architectural, monumental, natural, tangible, and intangible assets that deserve a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The State Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO reminded that the basic prerequisite for a locality to be nominated for inclusion on the World Heritage List is to be under the highest level of protection in the country that is nominating it.
”In order to begin the preparation of the nomination file, the first step is to determine on the basis of which UNESCO criteria will the asset be applied for enrollment. The criteria are defined by the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention. Once the criteria are determined, the Tentative List is prepared, and then follows the complex process of creating the nomination file,” explained the Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO.
The State Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO points out that the preparation of nominations is an extremely complex and long-term job that requires the engagement of a large number of experts and the involvement of all competent and interested parties. Also, for the preparation of the nominations, it is necessary to provide significant financial resources, in the preparation phase, but also after the possible registration on the UNESCO list.
Funds are approved annually from various UNESCO Funds for projects implemented by public institutions and non-governmental organizations in BiH. The city of Zivinice became a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, while Sarajevo is a member of the UNESCO Network of Creative Cities in the field of film.
