Members of B&H expedition “FIBULA ARARAT 2015,” Tomislav Cvitanušić, Kenan Berberović and Hasan Karabeg, successfully completed the expedition after 7 – day long stay in Turkey, and the flag of B&H again proudly fluttered on the “roof” of Turkey, Mount Ararat (5137m), on the 29th of August 2015, at 4: 15 p.m.
Mount Ararat is located on the northeast of Turkey, 16 kilometers west from Iran and 32 kilometers south from Armenia. It is a snowy volcanic dome, with a height of 5,137 meters, 355 meters higher from the highest peak of Western Europe (Mt Blanc, 4,810 m).
Its highest peak is covered with eternal snow and ice, and it looks like a white pillow on which the desert sky is resting and dreaming heavenly dreams. Ararat is certainly the most famous mountain with the symbolic and mystical importance for the whole human race. Ararat is the only mountain mentioned in the Old Testament as the place where Noah’s Ark docked after the Great Flood.
The final climb to the highest peak was carried out on the 29th of August 2015, and members of the expedition departure to the top at 01:00 p.m. from the camp C1, which is located 4200 meters above the sea level. The climb lasted for a little more than 5 hours, and besides the height of the peak itself, which is more than 5000 meters high, and possible altitude sickness, expedition members had to face with an unexpectedly strong snowstorm, freezing temperatures as well as the reduced visibility, which was only 5 meters at certain points. Despite all the problems that occurred during the final climb, everything went well, and the members of the expedition managed to return safely to the base camp during the afternoon hours.
