In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 169,775 students were enrolled in regular elementary schools and schools for children with special needs in the 2022/2023 school year, which is 2.0 percent less, or 3,438 students, compared to the previous school year. The share of female students in the total number of students is 48.7 percent, Fena news agency reports.

The largest number of enrolled students is in the Sarajevo Canton (22.4 percent) and the Tuzla Canton (20.6 percent), while the smallest number of enrolled students is in the Posavina Canton (0.9 percent) and Bosnian-Podrinje Canton Goražde (1.2 percent), showed data from the FBiH Institute for Statistics.

In education statistics, the unit of observation is every regular elementary school, every elementary school for children with special needs, as well as every class/department, which was formed at a regular school, as well as elementary music education, which prepares children for continuing education in secondary art schools.

Primary education lasts nine years and is compulsory for all children from six or seven to fifteen years of age.
