The Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations, Zlatko Lagumdžija, is among those who believe that the low-flying flight of two American bombers announced for tomorrow represents a political message.
World powers, and the United States of America is the number one world power, often express their views with symbolic messages that can have implications in reality. The US also used such messages in mediating negotiations to achieve peace.
Negotiations in Camp David and Dayton
During the negotiations between Israel and Egypt at the Camp David resort of the American president in the late 70s, the then US president Jimmy Carter took the delegation of the two countries to Gettysburg, one of the bloodiest battlefields of the American Civil War, where more than 50,000 people lost their lives. During the visit, Carter told both delegations that they would see Gettysburg if they did not accept the proposed agreement.
The psychological impact of subtle messages during the negotiations was not absent in the negotiations at the American military air base “Wright-Patterson” in the city of Dayton to end the last war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The choice of the very location of the negotiations was a message to the negotiators from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Croatia.
The American chief mediator and creator of the Dayton Peace Agreement, Richard Holbrook, in the book dedicated to this agreement “To End a War”, pointed out that the President of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović, and the President of the FRY, Slobodan Milošević, were given a dinner under the wings of a B-2 bomber. which was another message to the negotiating states.
“The message couldn’t be clearer”
Lagumdžija, who is a former minister of foreign affairs and who is a very good connoisseur of American domestic and foreign policy, stated in a statement to Klix.ba that he agreed that the announced flight of two American B-1B Lancer bombers over Sarajevo and several other BH cities represents a political message.
“It is a message to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the entire region. It is a message to those who would import instability and disrupt the prosperity of the entire region,” he pointed out.
He noted that the low flight of the bombers, which cost as much as 317 million dollars per piece, is part of joint exercises of tactical forces with the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AS BiH). He pointed out that this is practicing a possible reaction to the threat of the peace agreement and the destabilization of the region.
He stated that it is important to highlight that this follows the messages of US President Joe Biden and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“This is a symbolic and concrete gesture of the permanent bond between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the USA as the country that brought peace. This is a message from American officials that they are committed to the common values and goals of the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina that were determined by the independence referendum, which confirmed by the Dayton Peace Agreement,” stated Lagumdžija.
He is of the opinion that this is a message that the USA is a necessary link, i.e. a condition for a peaceful, safe and prosperous future not only of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also of the region.
According to Lagumdžija, the low flight of the plane is a message that could not be clearer, Klix.ba reports.
