Mothers and children in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s (BiH) city of Tuzla, some 120 kilometres northeast of the capital Sarajevo, celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday, emphasizing the importance of motherhood, local media reported Sunday.

For the third time, Members of New Women’s Initiative marked the Women’s Day by selling handmade items at the exhibition “Small Bazaar” at the famous bridge in Tuzla.

Organizer and coordinator of the program for marking the Mother’s Day Alisa Salkovic told local media that this organization is the first one to mark and celebrate this unique event, pointing out on its humanitarian character.

She said that money from renting the stands will be donated to local children hospital, and that their aim is to contribute to “bringing the cult of the mother back to the pedestal it deserves and to remind citizens on the symbolism of the day that everyone should celebrate.”

Children attending the local primary school in Tuzla marked the Mother’s Day by singing songs and painting photos portraying the importance of mother for them. They also engaged in making boxes and painting them by “decoupage technique” where they glued different kind of paper cuts along with other materials, making a uniform appearance of painted photo.

Sunny weather brought people living in Tuzla together to celebrate Mothers’ Day, sending a unified message that mothers deserve more than just one day in a year to be remembered, pointing out that being a mother brings a lot of waivers. They mutually agreed that BiH institutions should take more care of mothers and grant them more money, adding that this will help BiH to have higher birth rates and younger and more productive population.

According to the World Bank (WB) statistics for 2015,the average births per woman in BiH is 1.25, while the EU average fertility rate is 1.58 children.
