BiH CoM adopted Decisions on the Construction of the eastern and southern Gas Connection

At yesterday’s session, the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) adopted several important decisions and among them, there are those related to the Southern and Eastern interconnections.

At the 11th regular session of the Council of Ministers, 26 items were discussed, and the ministers unanimously adopted a decision concerning the Draft Basis for Conducting Negotiations for the Conclusion of the Agreement between BiH and Croatia on the Construction of the Gas Pipeline “Southern Interconnection of BiH and the Republic of Croatia” on the route Zagvozd (Croatia) – Posusje (BiH) – Novi Travnik with the path for Mostar.

Namely, the southern interconnection should be an alternative for the Russian one and it refers to the import of gas from Azerbaijan. What has caused a lot of controversy is the idea of legally enabling the formation of a special company founded by two Herzegovinian cantons, which would exclude the federal company BH Gas.

Also, at the session, the draft basis for conducting negotiations for the conclusion of the Agreement between BiH and Serbia on the construction of the gas pipeline “New Eastern Interconnection of BiH and the Republic of Serbia” on the border between Serbia – BiH – Bijeljina – Banja Luka – Prijedor– Bosanski Novi was adopted.

The government from RS insists on the eastern interconnection, which should be a new route for Russian gas, which is in some way contrary to the official policy of the European Union (EU), which after the Russian aggression against Ukraine works to achieve as little dependence on Russian energy sources as possible.

Unlike the Council of Ministers, which approved the drafts concerning the initiation of interconnection projects, members of the BiH Presidency, Zeljko Komsic and Denis Becirovic, stated that they would not support these projects, Klix.ba reports.
