BiH in Ministerial Deadlock still

FBiH Government (Pouzdano)Three ethnic groups so far unable to agree a deal just weeks after EU gives membership green light

The Bosnian government remains locked in talks over the distribution of ministerial positions. Horse trading between the three coalition sides – the Bosniak Muslims, Serbs and Croats – has so far failed to bring about a deal.

The political deadlock comes just weeks after EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini said Bosnia had made a ‘historic’ step towards membership.

During elections in October last year, nationalists from all three ethnic groups backed differing visions for the country’s future – with Serbs seeking a separate state, Croats wanting their own federal region and Muslims desiring national unity.

Bosnia’s corruption, unstable political situation and high unemployment have hindered efforts to join the EU and NATO.
