BiH Presidency Member: The Conclusion of the agreement on the border between BiH and Serbia is a Priority Issue

In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Presidency of BiH, the member of the Presidency Denis Bećirović proposed on January 20 of this year that at the upcoming regular session of the Presidency of BiH, the report of the State Commission for the Border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, regarding the state demarcation between Bosnia and Herzegovina and of the Republic of Serbia, with a proposal for concrete conclusions, it was announced today from the Cabinet of BiH Presidency member Denis Bećirović.

“One of the open bilateral issues in the relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Serbia relates to the regulation of the interstate border, i.e. the signing of the Agreement on the State Border. In this context, the issue of concluding an agreement on the border between two sovereign states, in accordance with the principles of peaceful settlement of disputes according to to the Charter of the United Nations, is a priority issue and is in the interest of both countries,” the statement said.

The member of the BiH Presidency, Denis Bećirović, assesses that the strengthening of good neighborly relations and the development of regional cooperation is an important aspect of building stability and the successful positioning of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the international level.

The contractual regulation of the issue of the state border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Serbia was a topic of discussion at the highest political level, but there were no meetings of authorized commissions for the borders of the two states in their last two mandates.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina the Draft Treaty on the State Border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia for opinion at the beginning of March 2019. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina issued a positive foreign policy opinion in accordance with the Law on the Procedure for the Conclusion and Execution of International Agreements, but further proceedings in this regard have not been continued to date.

“The signing of the Treaty on the State Border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Serbia would enable the demarcation of the state border between the two countries and confirm that good neighborly relations and regional cooperation are key elements of the stabilization and association process. Also, the improvement of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s bilateral relations with neighboring countries from is of fundamental importance for the stability and realization of the foreign policy goals of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially in relation to the achievement of full membership in the European Union”, writes in a statement from the Cabinet of BiH Presidency member Denis Bećirović.
