BiH records Increase of Number of Active Cards

The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CBBH) has published its regular annual report on card transactions in BH, in 2022.

In the end of 2022, the total number of active cards was 2,333,131 and it was higher by 114,202 compared to 2021. Twenty one banks in Bosnia and Herzegovina issued cards for their clients.

In 2022, the total value of transactions, realised by cards in the country and abroad, was BAM 14,103,186,627, having increased by 17.95% compared to the previous year. The value of card transactions has been continuously increasing year after year.

The total number of card transactions was 143,812,765 with visible growth trend.

The average value of a transaction was BAM 98, which is lower by BAM 6 compared to 2021, while the average annual turnover per card amounted to BAM 6,045, being higher by BAM 656 compared to 2021.

According to data, the increase of internet card transactions was evident. The percentage of realised internet card transactions in the country was 29%, while that in foreign countries was 71%.

 

The growth of ATM, POS and internet card transactions was recorded. Out of the total value of card transactions, 70% was realised on ATMs, 27% on POS devices, while 3% was realised on internet.

The value realised abroad by cards issued by BH banks was higher by 33% compared to the previous year, out of it, a larger share was related to purchases of goods and services on POS devices (81.56%), while only 18.44% was related to cash withdrawals on ATMs and POS devices.

Compared to 2021, the realised value of foreign cards in BH banks and shops increased by 46.64%. In transaction structure, cash withdrawals on ATMs and POS devices accounted for 62.68%, while the share of purchases of goods and services on POS devices was 37.32%.

The development of card infrastructure continued, so, in the end of the year, there were 1,653 installed ATMs and 32,633 POS devices. Out of the total number of the installed POS devices, 32,047 was installed in shops and 586 at bank counters.
