By the end of the year, in Sarajevo settlement of Stup, a modern veterinary institute should be put into operation, which will include several laboratories for control of key infectious diseases of animals, such as mad cow disease, bird flu, lumpy skin, blue tongue, brucellosis and Q fever.
As such, this institute should be the most referent diagnostic and research center in Southeast Europe, said Dean of the Veterinary Faculty in Sarajevo, Nihad Fejzic.
He noted that after the last decision of the Government of FBiH were created conditions for this facility, which was built four years ago, to finally have a use and to start implementing already secured funding.
“The object was built by funds of the World Bank in the amount of 3.5 million BAM, and subsequently were provided additional funds of the Government of Canton Sarajevo in the amount of 500,000 BAM, and funds from the FBiH in the amount of 1.28 million BAM. Unfortunately, the building stood without use for four years due to various bureaucratic obstacles, so it will be necessary to allocate additional money for its reconstruction,” said Fejzic.
“We have an information system, a number of people from the university will be involved in the institute, which will own the most modern equipment to control the disease. We have funds provided for everything, so we will soon have a diagnostic laboratory for the control of diseases that are common to humans and animals,” said Fejzic.
As he noted, the priority is to protect the health of animals, and then the people who eat the food of animal origin, and after that will be opened the space for investment in livestock production. Investments will come, he said, where are provided conditions for animal health.
