Minister of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina Selmo Cikotic met today in Brussels with EU Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi and Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarcic.

They discussed the security situation in BiH and the region, strengthening cooperation between BiH and European Union institutions in the field of security and fulfilling the obligations that BiH has on the path to European integration.

Special focus is placed on the migrant situation, but also on resolving the security and humanitarian challenges facing BiH.

Cikotić pointed out that BiH wants to make systemic and long-lasting solutions in this segment, and emphasized the commitment of state institutions to take over the management of this process. One example of such an approach is the construction of the Lipa reception center near Bihać, which will have adequate conditions for accommodating 1,500 people.

BiH Minister of Security pointed out that he expects the European Union to apply the same standards in resolving the issue of migration in BiH in the way that is the case in the entire region.

It was also concluded that the current cooperation and support of the European Union will be continued and that greater involvement and financial support of domestic institutions is necessary in order to adequately manage the migrant situation in BiH.

At a meeting with Crisis Management Commissioner Lenarcic, Cikotic asked for BiH to become a full member of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, and was promised that this would be put into procedure as soon as possible, the BiH Ministry of Security stated in the press release.
