Bosnia and Herzegovina is considered a European champion in the habit of regular hand washing, which is worth noting at a time when the region is on the verge of the peak of the flu season, and experts are urging preventive measures.
Several types of flu have been confirmed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia and beyond, and the peak of flu infections is expected in late January and February.
The competent authorities have been monitoring the spread of flu since autumn and are generally satisfied with this year’s response to vaccination, which is the most effective way to combat this infectious disease.
Time for prevention
Data from the public health institutes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia show that the number of patients with flu symptoms is increasing, but an epidemic has not yet been declared in any country. Most experts predict that the season should be on average with the previous one.

It manifests itself with symptoms that are often similar to the common cold, so the fact that flu can have dangerous consequences is ignored. The incubation period is short, sometimes less than 24 hours. The patient is contagious one day before the onset of symptoms and five to seven days after the onset of symptoms.
In addition to vaccination, general flu prevention measures include avoiding crowds and more intensive hygienic handwashing practices.
Bosnians and Herzegovina are European champions
As difficult as it is for the Balkan spirit to prove that mass gatherings in closed spaces are not desirable during the flu season, the peoples of the region deserve praise for their traditionally ingrained hygiene habits.
According to a study by the German online platform Statista, citizens of BiH are European champions in the habit of washing their hands after using the toilet.
Unlike the Dutch, Italians, French, Russians and Austrians, who occupy the bottom of the European list in terms of handwashing habits, the countries of the region are at the top of the list.
BiH is in first place with 96 percent of respondents who regularly wash their hands with soap after using the toilet.
Turkey is in second place with 94 percent. Of the countries in the region, it is worth mentioning that Kosovo has 85 percent of the population with such a habit, Serbia 83 percent, says Satista, AA writes.
