Blinken to the BiH Presidency Members: Withdrawal from State Institutions will be sanctioned

After a meeting between the Chairman and members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) with Derek Chollet, Senior Political Adviser to United States (U.S.) Secretary of State Antony Blinken, it was revealed that Blinken had sent a letter to members of the BiH Presidency.

It was addressed to all three members of the Presidency of BiH, ie to the chairman Zeljko Komsic and the members Sefik Dzaferovic and Milorad Dodik.

”In March, I wrote to you in the spirit of deep partnership that our countries share, to ask you for guidance to advance reforms that will ensure that peace and the power-sharing structure of the Dayton Agreement remain a solid foundation for a more prosperous future for all citizens of BiH. Since then, a political crisis has developed in your country threatening the stability of this region,” Blinken wrote in the first part of his letter.

Deescalation of the political crisis

He pointed out that his concerns were raised by, as he wrote, “the orbit of your state”, and stressed the unwaveringcommitment of the U.S. to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of BiH as one state with two entities and the Brcko District.

”I call on your commitment to de-escalate the current political crisis and re-engage with international partners in a program of sound economic, electoral, limited constitutional and rule of law reforms vital to your citizens towards a prosperous European future.”

As a signing witness of the Dayton Peace Agreement, the U.S.reiterates that moves to unilaterally withdraw from state-level institutions or any other attempt to destabilize the Dayton Agreement will be faced with appropriate measures, including consideration of sanctions.

Cooperation of three constituent peoples

”The U.S. is the strongest partner of BiH in solving the problem of separation of powers and functional deficits through dialogue. But, it requires a return to the table, participation in decision-making, and a commitment to building the consensus that is needed to move this country forward.

In order to achieve the stability and prosperity of BiH, the cooperation of all three constituent peoples, the Republika Srpska (RS) and the entities of the Federation is needed, so equal rights for all citizens could be achieved. We cannot allow another election cycle to pass without improving the integrity of elections that ensure that all votes are counted.
