Bosnian Cheese Pie as one of the best Dishes in the World

On the list of the best dishes in the world that contain cheese, there was also the “representative” of Bosnia and Herzegovina – cheese pie – which took 17th place, and it is interesting that it is one position above “cheese burek”.

The best cheese dish is considered to be Raclette – a Swiss dish of melted cheese that is served with boiled potatoes, pickles and cured meat products.

On the 17th place on the list was the cheese pie, which was described on the website of Taste Atlas, which created the list, as a salty Bosnian pie made of phyllo dough filled with a combination of fresh cow’s cheese, sour cream and eggs.

“Thin sheets of dough, locally known as jufka, are coated with a cheese mixture and the whole pie is traditionally twisted into a spiral. Before serving, the cheese pie is occasionally sprinkled with water, oil or milk. Although it can be enjoyed on its own, with this savory pie yogurt or sour cream are often added,” it states.

It is interesting that almost the same dish with another name “burek with cheese” is in 16th place, and even Taste Atlas notes that in Bosnia and Herzegovina burek is only a pie filled with meat.

“You may have heard that burek can only be called burek if it is filled with meat. That is, if you live in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but not everyone does, nor is burek really Bosnian – in fact, it has Turkish origins,” stated Taste Atlas.

“In Bosnia, burek (with meat) and other types of similar pies such as sirnica and krumpirusa are usually rolled into a ring, while Croats and Serbs have a more relaxed approach – burek can be round and cut into quarters or rolled into a ring – both shapes are good and both can be called burek with cheese (of course when it’s filled with cheese),” they add, Klix.ba reports.
