sutjeskaMore than 6.000 citizens signed a petition requesting the National Assembly of Republika Srpska to issue a conclusion that construction of small hydro power plants in the National Park (NP) “Sutjeska” is not of public national interest.

That number of signatures is double than it was necessary to launch this civil initiative.

Nataša Crnković from Banja Luka Environment Center said at the press conference in Banja Luka today that they collected signatures in the past seven days at 12 locations in Republika Srpska.

With this initiative the ecologists wanted to enable the citizens to state their opinion on construction of small hydro power plants in the “Sutjeska” National Park.

”Now we are sure that the wider public is on our side, and we will not stop here, but we will use all legal means to ‘defend Sutjeska’’, said Crnković.

“Sutjeska” is the oldest national park in BiH and one of the biologically most diverse areas in South East Europe, whose biologically most valuable parts are canyons of Sutjeska and Hrčavka and Strict Nature Reserve Perućica.

Campaign “Battle for Sutjeska“ was launched as a response to plans for construction of small hydro power plants at the “Sutjeska” National Park.

Investor “Drina Hydro Energy“ from Ugljevik plans to build five small hydro power plants, two on Sutjeska and three on Hrčavka.
