Canada announced Military Aid to Ukraine worth 1.34 Billion Euros

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a €1.34 billion military aid package for Ukraine during a visit to Kyiv to mark Ukraine’s 34th Independence Day.

Carney shared details of the military aid package, which was pledged at the G7 summit in June. The comprehensive aid package includes €517 million for critical equipment such as armored vehicles, medical equipment, spare parts, small arms, ammunition and explosives, plus additional drone capabilities, according to the prime minister’s office.

Approximately €421 million is earmarked for the purchase of military equipment from the United States that is being prioritized by NATO for Kyiv’s air defense needs. An additional €136 million will fund drone, counter-drone and electronic warfare capabilities, including joint investments by Ukrainian and Canadian industry.

The package allocates €102 million for Canada’s work in the Contact Group for Ukraine Defense capabilities coalitions and €61.9 million for ammunition through the Czech Ammunition Initiative.

Carney also announced over €19.2 million in humanitarian assistance and initiatives to counter digital attacks and growing threats to Ukrainian democracy.

“Ukraine is, once again, on the front lines of the fight for democracy and freedom. This is a crucial moment when allies must step forward and take the lead, and Canada is answering that call,” Carney said.

Canada maintains strong ties with Ukraine, having been one of the first Western countries to recognize Ukraine’s independence in 1991 and hosting over a million Ukrainians. Since February 2022, when the war with Russia began, Canada has provided nearly €13.62 billion in assistance.

Carney met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko, and members of the Cabinet in Kyiv.

The announcement comes amid intense diplomatic efforts by US President Donald Trump, who recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the US state of Alaska and then hosted Zelensky and European leaders in Washington.

Trump announced plans for bilateral talks between Putin and Zelensky while security guarantees for Ukraine are being considered.
