The City of Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is once again marking the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide this year by proclaiming July 11th as the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. On this day, tribute is paid to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, and Ottawa commits to promoting truth, justice, and a culture of remembrance, while condemning genocide denial.
Every year, the Mayor of Ottawa regularly proclaims July 11th as the official Remembrance Day for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, in memory of the murder of over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys.
As a reminder, back in 2010, the Canadian Parliament adopted a resolution recognizing the Srebrenica genocide and condemning its denial, thereby establishing July 11th as the Canadian Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day.
Canadian authorities at all levels support the culture of remembrance regarding the Srebrenica genocide, a process in which the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community plays a significant role in cooperation with the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada.
This year, the central Canadian commemoration for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide will be held on July 11th in Windsor, in front of the first monument dedicated to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide in the diaspora.
Proclamation
Whereas, in 2010, the Parliament of Canada unanimously adopted Resolution M-416, which recognized the Srebrenica genocide and declared July 11th as Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day in Canada; and
Whereas, the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada is a public scientific institution engaged in the analysis of crimes against peace, the crime of genocide, and other grave breaches of international law; and
Whereas, the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada proclaims June 11th to July 11th, 2026, as the Month of Remembrance for the Srebrenica Genocide; and
Whereas, the City of Ottawa recognizes the importance of this event for the future of Bosnian-Herzegovinian citizens in Ottawa through justice and truth;
THEREFORE, I, Mark Sutcliffe, Mayor of the City of Ottawa, do hereby proclaim July 11th, 2026, as Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day in Ottawa.
At a time when judicially established facts regarding the aggression and genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina are increasingly being brought into question, the victory of Ottawa and Canada over oblivion and revisionism remains both a reminder and a lasting obligation toward the victims and future generations. They have a right to the facts, rather than to a reinterpretation into which genocide deniers in Canada are investing significant resources.
The truth about the Srebrenica genocide has been confirmed by the judgments of international courts, and it does not depend on threats, insults, or propaganda. The fight for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and for the dignity of the victims, is not waged solely on the political front. It is carried out through the preservation of truth, justice, and a culture of remembrance. Any relativization, silence, or failure to understand this fight opens up space for those who deny crimes and threaten new injustices.
