Polish border guards discovered more than 100 kg of cocaine at the bottom of the Baltic Sea while conducting operations to protect key infrastructure, the border guard announced yesterday.

Seven people have been detained in a case involving drugs, which border guards say could reach a value of up to 60 million zlotys (15 million dollars) on the black market, according to the border guard’s statement.

The Baltic countries are on high alert due to possible incidents involving underwater key infrastructure, and NATO has announced an increased presence in the area following several cases in which such infrastructure suffered suspicious damage.

The drugs were found on the seabed in the area of the Gulf of Gdansk in northern Poland, the statement said. The locations of the suspects were subsequently identified, leading to the discovery of additional significant quantities of drugs.

Authorities stated that the detainees if convicted, could face sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
