Works on the Kalin hadži Alija’s waqf in the center of Sarajevo, where a mosque is to be built again, are to begin soon. The Waqf Directorate of Bosnia and Herzegovina note that a mosque was located on the corner of presents streets of Kulovića and Branilaca grada in Sarajevo, in the period from 1553 to 1947, when it was demolished by the authorities at the time.
A park and residential facility were constructed at that locality. Clerks and military officers of the Yugoslav National Army were accommodated in the facility. The park was later named after the Slovenian poet Franc Prešern.
Remains of the mosque and the cemetery were found during execution of works on park landscaping in 2004.
The Riyasat supported the Waqf Directorate in its intention to build a mosque at that locality again.
