The Serbian government plane carrying the former commander of the Third Army of the Yugoslav Army and Chief of the General Staff, convicted of war crimes in Kosovo, Nebojsa Pavkovic, took off from Finland to Belgrade, Serbian media reported on Sunday.

Upon arrival in Belgrade, Pavkovic will be transferred by ambulance to the Military Medical Academy.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Friday that Pavkovic would be released on early parole.

According to regional media, Pavkovic was released early due to poor health.

The Appeals Chamber of the Hague Tribunal confirmed Pavkovic‘s sentence of 22 years in prison in Finland in 2014 for crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war, including murder, persecution, deportation, and forced transfer.
