In the first nine months of the current year, courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina resolved 3% more cases than expected.

“In the period from 01/01 – 09/30/2023, 135,095 oldest cases were resolved out of the planned 172,254 cases, which means that 78% of the plans for resolving cases for 2023 were realized, compared to the expected 75%”, the VSTS announced.

The Supreme Court of Justice says that the analysis shows that first-instance courts – municipal, basic and district economic courts – on average implemented their plans in the amount of 76%, while the courts of higher instances resolved 91% of the cases provided for in their plans (quarterly plans were implemented in the amount of 97 %, while the annual plans of the courts of higher instances were realized with 77%).

Observed by entities, the courts in the Federation of BiH resolved 93,618 cases and realized the realization of the plan in the amount of 78%, in the Republika Srpska 38,389 cases with a percentage of the realization of the plan in the amount of 80%, in Brčko District of BiH 1,979 cases with a percentage of the realization of the plan in the amount of 60%, while the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina resolved a total of 1,109 cases from the plan and achieved a percentage of implementation of the plan in the amount of 83%.

In the plan for resolving cases in courts of all levels in the first three quarters of 2023, there were a total of 9,789 cases initiated in the two oldest age categories (cases initiated in 2013 and earlier), of which 74%, or 7,283 cases, were resolved. Although the courts resolved a significant number of these cases provided for in the case resolution plans, it is necessary to further intensify the work on resolving cases from the two oldest age categories of cases, in order to resolve the oldest cases from the case resolution plans of individual courts by the end of the current year.

The Permanent Commission for the Efficiency and Quality of Courts of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HJSC BiH) regularly monitors the case resolution process within the framework of case resolution plans. All courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina have the obligation to draw up a case resolution plan in accordance with the provisions of the Instructions for Drawing Up Case Resolution Plans.
