Dado Ruvic’s Exhibition ‘Srebrenica – 30 Years’

On the occasion of commemorating 30 years since the genocide in Srebrenica, an exhibition entitled “Srebrenica – 30 years” by Dado Ruvić was opened in Kakanj. The exhibition presents powerful scenes that depict the struggle for the truth with the aim of preserving the memory and passing it on to younger generations. It remains open until July 12.

The photos show moments of pain and the fight for justice that has lasted for three decades. As a Reuters correspondent, Dado Ruvić began recording the dignity of funerals in Srebrenica through the lens of his camera. Today, 30 years after the genocide, his exhibition entitled “Srebrenica – 30 years” brings a visual testimony of a crime that must not be forgotten.

“We did it in an unusual way. We took the photos to the street, we wanted to impose them on the young generation who do not know, who are not aware of what was happening,” says Ruvić.

His photographs are not only a document, but also a means of education.

“However, since I am presenting it to the younger generation, I went to show what Srebrenica looks like from the air, what a mass grave is, what identification is. This is like a general exhibition about Srebrenica,” Ruvić points out.

Presenting the exhibition to the general public contributes to fostering a culture of remembrance because each photograph is a testimony of those who survived.

“It is unnecessary to introduce Dado Ruvić and his contribution to the promotion of Bosnia and Herzegovina globally, but this exhibition itself, as it has been in the making for years and symbolically 30 pictures for 30 years since the genocide,” says Dženan Ajdinović, director of the Cultural and Sports Center Kakanj.

OFF: The exhibition “Srebrenica – 30 Years” is not a look back, it is a look into the consciousness of every person. Because the culture of remembrance is not a choice, it is a debt to those who are no longer there.
