Damage of 2.5 Million BAM after Floods in Northwest of BiH

In the floods that affected several local communities in the area of the Una-Sana Canton during May of this year, damage of 2.76 million marks was caused.

This is stated in the report adopted by the USC Government at today’s session after the commissions in cities and municipalities visited the threatened area and listed all the damage caused.

According to those reports, the greatest damages were in Bihać, Sanski Most and Bosanska Krupa, and in the meantime, 632,000 marks were paid in the local communities from the USC budget for assistance in emergency interventions and mitigating the consequences of the natural disaster.

“Due to the extremely large amount of damage compared to the help received so far and our own funds, it is necessary to send a request for help in removing the consequences and repairing the damage to the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Headquarters of Civil Protection,” the report stated.

During the May floods, hundreds of residential buildings were under water, and the most critical situation was recorded in the area of the aforementioned local communities where the Una and Sana rivers and their tributaries overflowed.

“We expect help, not only in terms of repairing the damage, which is huge, for the second time in six months. This time we are also talking about the damage that unfortunately also affected farmers. The entire spring sowing was destroyed by these floods. We will ask that a strategic position be taken, how to reduce harmful climate impacts and the consequences of floods, but also to act preventively. I think that the City of Bihać and no local community can do this alone. We are talking about millions of funds,” said Elvedin Sedić, Mayor of Bihać.

The head of the Municipality of Sanski Most, Faris Hasanbegović, says that aid should soon be paid to the citizens who suffered damage in the December floods last year.

The necessary funds have yet to be secured for the restoration of the consequences of the floods in May.
