What does a Day in the Life of a SIPA Officer look like?

SIPAIf you have ever wondered who arrests suspects for the most severe criminal offenses in the country, the answer is – SIPA officers.

Since the establishment of the Unit in 2005, they have performed around 1.400 tasks in which more than 1.000 suspects were arrested.

Members of SIPA Special Forces arrest individuals suspected of committing the most severe criminal offenses in the country – criminals, corrupt politicians, drug traffickers, terrorists, war criminals.

ALFA, BETA AND GAMA are three detachments of the Support Unit of the State Investigation and Protection Agency of BiH. These police officers are trained to perform high-risk tasks in the fight against organized crime and corruption in the country.

“First part of the day is dedicated to some physical training, aimed at raising physical readiness and improving body shape. Those are usually programs of general physical preparation through training applied fighting, functional strength, swimming, alpine skiing during the winter season, alpinism, climbing and descent techniques,” described one SIPA Special Forces member his usual day.

Senad Zec, Head of the Anti-Terrorism Detachment, says: “Every task of ours is approached in the same way, no matter if it is easier or harder. It happened sometimes that a task lasts for more than 24 hours and we must be awake and support the organizational units of the agency which conduct raids and arrests. Sometimes it happened that those raids and arrests last for more than 36 hours”.

“I think that every young police officer dreams about becoming a Special Forces member. After five years of police experience in another police agency I managed to enter the Special Forces. Of course, I am proud of being a member of SIPA’s Special Unit and that I contribute to the safer life of BiH citizens,” said the SIPA member.

Behind these police officers are many drills, training sessions, competitions, and they bring rewards from around the world. One such drill in Wales last year lasted for 48 hours and brought them third place.

“A special thing about our unit is that it has a large number of members who went to peacekeeping missions of UN in Liberia, South Sudan, Somalia, where we had the opportunity to cooperate with colleagues from all around the world, share our experiences, knowledge and skills. We have shown that we are ready to train the police of, in my case, South Sudan, shoulder to shoulder with other colleagues from the world. It all had a positive reflection on BiH, the Agency and the Unit,” said one of the Special Forces members.
