Archaeologists have discovered an exceptionally rare and sensational find in the waters off the coast of Alexandria – an ancient Egyptian pleasure ship that perfectly matches the descriptions recorded by the Greek historian Strabo in the first century BC. The discovery has caused great excitement in archaeological and scientific circles, as it represents the first material evidence of the existence of this type of vessel from the period of early Roman Egypt.

Alexandria – one of the most magnificent ancient metropolises

At the height of its glory, Alexandria was one of the most splendid cities of the ancient world. The city was adorned with magnificent temples, royal palaces, and the famous Pharos lighthouse, about 130 meters high, which was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Alexandria was the center of political, commercial, and cultural life in the Mediterranean, as well as a place of luxury, ritual, and entertainment.

It is precisely in this context that the new discovery should be viewed – a luxury ship intended for the royal court and the wealthy elite, used for ceremonial voyages, ceremonies, and public festivals.

A ship with a pavilion and a lavish cabin

The discovered ship dates to the first half of the first century AD. It is about 35 meters long and approximately seven meters wide, and according to researchers’ estimates, operating it required more than 20 rowers. The vessel’s construction indicates exceptionally skilled shipbuilding – the bow is flat, while the stern is rounded, which allowed for safe navigation in very shallow waters.

The central part of the ship was intended for a pavilion with a luxuriously decorated cabin, further confirming that it was not a merchant or military vessel, but a ship for pleasure and display.

Found near the sunken island of Antirhodos

The ship was discovered near the sunken island of Antirhodos, which in antiquity was part of Portus Magnus – the great Alexandrian harbor complex. It lay at a depth of only seven meters, covered by about a meter and a half of sediment, which contributed to the exceptionally good preservation of the wooden structural elements.

The uniqueness of the ship initially puzzled researchers. The project leader, French maritime archaeologist Franck Goddio, admitted that he originally thought it was two ships lying one on top of the other, due to the unusual combination of construction elements.

A ship described by Strabo

In addition to its archaeological value, the find has exceptional historiographical significance because it corresponds to the writings of Strabo, who visited Alexandria between 29 and 25 BC. He described in detail the luxury ships used by the royal court, as well as the crowds of people who celebrated, danced, and played music on them daily during religious and public festivals.

According to Franck Goddio, this is the first time that such a ship has actually been found, even though similar vessels were known from ancient texts and artistic depictions, such as the famous mosaic from Palestrina, which shows smaller versions of such ships.

Possible connection to the Temple of Isis

The latest discovery lies less than 50 meters from the Temple of the goddess Isis, one of the most important religious centers of ancient Alexandria, which Goddio and his team have been researching for years. It is assumed that the ship sank around the year 50 AD, during the catastrophic destruction of the temple.

A series of powerful earthquakes and tidal waves led to the submergence of large portions of the Alexandrian coast, including palaces, temples, and harbors. However, there is another theory – that the ship had a ritual function.

A sacred ship of the Goddess of the Sea

Goddio does not rule out the possibility that it was a sacred barque used in religious ceremonies, especially during the ritual of the navigatio Isidis. This was a procession in honor of the goddess Isis, during which a richly decorated vessel – the Navigium – passed through the harbor, symbolizing the solar barque of Isis, the protectress of the sea and navigation.

Adding further mystery to the discovery are the Greek graffiti found on the central part of the ship. Their meaning has not yet been deciphered, but researchers believe they could provide valuable information about the crew, the ship’s purpose, or the religious context of its use.

A discovery that opens new questions about ancient life

Although the research is still in its early stages, experts believe the ship could significantly contribute to understanding daily life, religion, luxury, and entertainment in early Roman Egypt. Professor Damian Robinson, director of the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology, emphasized that this is a type of ship that has never been found before.

According to UNESCO rules on the protection of underwater cultural heritage, the wreck will not be brought to the surface but will remain on the sea floor. Research will continue, and archaeologists note that only a small part of this exceptionally rich area has been explored so far.

Excavations off the coast of Alexandria will continue, and experts believe that many more discoveries lie hidden beneath the sea, which could change our understanding of the ancient world.
