The Embassy of the United States of America in Bosnia and Herzegovina today assessed as irresponsible and anti-Dayton action the statement of the President of the entity Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik that the Government of the RS made an official decision to propose the “disassociation” of the RS from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“In other words, it means the secession of RS; it is a dangerous, irresponsible, anti-Dayton action that puts the territorial integrity, sovereignty and multi-ethnic character of Bosnia and Herzegovina at risk. And those are the key interests of the US. The United States will defend and protect them, among other things, by calling to account those who expose them to risk,” the American embassy warned in its reaction.
As it further stated, Dodik and the Government of the RS tried to explain this decision with a group of lies and misinformation designed to scare the public in the RS into following them on this dangerous path.
“The facts are simple and clear. There is no international conspiracy to abolish the RS, and Dodik cannot single out a single statement by any American official calling for the abolition of the RS. BiH is not a union of two entities. As expressly stated in the Dayton Peace Agreement and the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina is the successor state of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” underline from the US Embassy.
They say that the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina does not grant the right to secession or “disassociation” either to the entities or to any lower administrative unit. RS can only exist within Bosnia and Herzegovina. The secession or “unification” of the RS does not mean the independence of the RS or the end of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but rather the end of the RS.
“Dodik’s activities put at risk the future within the Euro-Atlantic institutions that the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the RS, want. The path he proposes would ensure that the citizens of the RS, their children and grandchildren do not have the peaceful, prosperous life in a democracy that they deserve,” they warn in a statement from the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
