Five skiers who disappeared during a ski tour in Switzerland have been found dead, while the search for the sixth skier is still ongoing, the police announced.

Police in the Swiss canton of Valais on Sunday began a search for six people who went missing during a ski tour that left the Alpine town of Zermatt.

The skiers, five of whom are members of the same family, went missing on Saturday around the Tête Blanche mountain on the Zermatt-Arolla trail, near the Matterhorn mountain located on the border between Switzerland and Italy.

The bodies were discovered Sunday in Tête Blanche, police said.

Valais police did not immediately respond to a request.

A storm in the southern Alps and the threat of avalanches prevented helicopters and rescuers from approaching the area, police said.

According to the police, the skiers were aged between 21 and 58 years. Five belonged to a family from the canton of Valais, while the sixth person was from the canton of Fribourg.

Zermatt is a popular mountain resort known for skiing and attracts tourists from all over the world.
