The memorial for the Drina martyrs on the left bank of the Drina River in Goražde is a pilgrimage for numerous Catholic believers. The interest in visiting the place where in 1941 four nuns chose death instead of humiliation is increasing, and this holy site was yesterday visited by pilgrims from Koprivnica.
Classroom on the second floor of the Primary School “Husein efendija Đozo” in Goražde was yesterday the site for prayer and expressing of emotions.
Precisely from the window of that classroom, four nuns who were brought from Pale in 1941 jumped to avoid torturing by the Chetniks of Draža Mihailović. Their death is a symbol of courage and commitment to the vow of purity and pride. A group of pilgrims from Koprivnica honored that courage and commitment yesterday, praying for the courageous nuns Jula, Krizina, Antonija and Bernardeta.
After the soldiers broke into their room with the intention to rape them, they jumped from the window. In front of the barracks, the Chetniks ferociously killed them and threw their bodies into the Drina River. Nun Berchmana was killed on the way from Pale to Goražde.
Candles were lit on the memorial that was placed in Goražde in 2011. Afterwards, the pilgrims threw flowers into the Drina River, the place where the bodies of the killed nuns were thrown.
Memorial for the Drina martyrs is more frequently a pilgrimage site for numerous Catholic believers. There were even some talks in Goražde about building a chapel dedicated to the nuns, whose act represents a symbol of loyalty to the vow of purity and pride.
