On the occasion of Earth Day, Eco Fair was held in Sarajevo under the organization of BiH Aarhus Center, OSCE Mission to BiH and City of Sarajevo at the International Center for Children and Youth.
The Mayor of Sarajevo Ivo Komšić, Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH Fletcher M. Burton and the Director of the Association of the Aarhus Center Sabina Jukan opened the fair.
The goal of the fair is the promotion of the work of 30 innovators, local and international nonprofit organizations, companies and schools, as well as the mutual exchange of experiences in the area of environmental protection.
Mayor Komšić said that it is very important that the city of Sarajevo participates in large projects such as this one, and that Earth Day is a reminder that the planet has to be taken care of in the same way we take care of our lives.
“In philosophy there is one attitude, and it is that nature is our second body and that is how we should behave towards it. From this point, many ecological movements have begun’’, said Komšić.
The Mayor added that associations at the local level that care about the environment are invaluable, and for the city of Sarajevo to be included in global celebrations’’, such as for the celebration of Earth Day.
Burton said that the OSCE Mission internally launched the “Green Program”, whose goal is to inform OSCE employees of the important issues tied to environmental protection. This year the OSCE Mission continues to increase the volume of activities in several ways, such as lending support to the Eco fair, competition for journalists that write about the environment and the expansion of the Aarhus Center in Tuzla and Banja Luka.
The Head of the Department for Environmental Protection from the Ministry for Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Senad Oprašić used this opportunity to announce that in Sarajevo on 5 June the central ceremony to mark Environmental Protection in Europe would be held.
