Economy of Canton Sarajevo recorded strong Increase in 2016

The annual analysis “The state of the economy in Canton Sarajevo in 2016 and at the beginning of 2017” showed significant progress in this canton, as well as improvement of the business environment, which was evidenced by the increase of employment, turnover of trade, increased volume and positive trends in the field of tourism and construction.

A turnover in the amount of 2.6 billion BAM, which is 2.4 % more than in 2015, was achieved in the retail sector. The number of tourists who visited Canton Sarajevo was 407,567, which is 11.9 % more compared to the previous year, while the number of overnight stays was increased by 18.6 %. The increase of 0.9 % in the field of production and supply of electricity and gas was recorded as well.

According to the analysis presented by the Chamber of Commerce of Canton Sarajevo, the number of employed citizens in the CS was increased by 16.1 %, while the number of unemployed was decreased by 4.7 %.

According to the latest statistics, the economy of Canton Sarajevo recorded positive trends at the beginning of 2017 in the fields of industry, forestry, internal trade, tourism and the increase in employment, and the Chamber made proposals for improvement and increase of business activities.

On the other hand, a decrease of 2.5 % was recorded in the sector of industrial production, mostly in the field of mining (76.9 %) as well as processing industry by 3.2 %, in comparison to the year of 2015.

In the future period is necessary to accelerate the process of adoption of sectoral strategies, to amend the law in order to adapt to the needs and interests of the domestic economy, to continue the process of simplification of the procedure for registration of companies, to undertake activities for the fight against the growth of liquidity of business subjects and to ensure realization of the investment cycle.
