EU warns: “Unjustified US Tariffs will not go unanswered“

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned on Tuesday that “unjustified” US tariffs on European products would not go unanswered, hinting at countermeasures.

“I deeply regret the decision of the United States to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminium exports. Tariffs are taxes – bad for business, worse for consumers,” Von der Leyen said in a written statement, adding:

“Unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered – they will trigger decisive and proportionate countermeasures.”

She stressed that the EU would take action to protect its economic interests.

“We will protect our workers, businesses and consumers,” Von der Leyen concluded.

European Council President Antonio Costa backed her statements, reaffirming a decisive and proportionate response to unjustified tariffs:

“The EU stands united in defending the interests of its businesses, workers and citizens. We are a reliable and predictable partner.”

Costa added that he would “continue to advocate for fair global trade.”

On Monday, Trump announced that the United States would impose 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports without exceptions. The measure will affect imports from a number of countries, especially major trading partners such as Canada, Mexico and European countries that are key suppliers of the metals to the U.S. market, AA writes.
