EUD/EUSR statement on freedom of media

andyCommenting on recent media freedom related incidents, EUD/EUSR spokesperson Andy McGuffie said:

“We are concerned with recent statements by some politicians in BiH, which can only be seen as attempts to stifle the legitimate freedom of expression. Targeting and abusing individual journalists or media houses demeans the democratic institutions of this country. It is disconcerting how there seems to be a lack of understanding of the distinction between state media – which BiH does not have – and public service media, which has the right to editorial independence.

“Ensuring freedom of expression and freedom of media are major priorities for the European Union (EU) and, as part of the Copenhagen political criteria, a key aspect of the EU integration process of the Western Balkans countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Free and professional media is non-negotiable for the EU.”
