EUFOR marked International Women’s Day

EUFOR marked International Women’s Day by recognising the dedication, professionalism and strength of women serving peace – both in uniform and in civilian roles.

Observed every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day has been celebrated globally for more than a century and serves as an important moment to recognize the achievements and contributions of women across all sectors of society. Fun fact: The idea of celebrating International Women’s Day first appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. This day arose as a day of struggle for women’s human rights, that is, a day of struggle for the economic, political, and social equality of women and men. The first Women’s Day was celebrated in 1909 in the USA.

To mark the occasion in 2026, EUFOR Commander, Major General Maurizio Fronda, hosted a reception this morning in Camp Butmir with female soldiers and civilian employees serving within EUFOR. During the gathering, the Commander expressed his appreciation for their dedication and contribution to the mission.

“Women serving in EUFOR demonstrate every day that professionalism, commitment and leadership are the foundations of effective peace support operations,” said Major General Fronda.
“Their contribution strengthens our mission and reflects the values of cooperation, respect and excellence that we stand for.”

He also highlighted the remarkable contribution of female personnel serving within EUFOR and NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, noting their professionalism, dedication and consistently high standards of performance.

The EUFOR Commander then invited the Commander of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, Matthew A. Wallas, to address the attendees. Brigadier General Wallas expressed his gratitude to the women present for their invaluable support to the mission, as well as for the strength and commitment they demonstrate in supporting their colleagues, families and communities.

This event concluded with a symbolic gesture of appreciation, as flowers were presented to all women in attendance in recognition of their service and contribution.
