European Parliament to Debate Situation in BiH

At the request of Member of the European Parliament Tineke Strik, who represents the Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA), the European Parliament will discuss the current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina(BiH) today.

The debate is titled: “Statement by the Commission on secessionist threats in BiH and the recent escalation.”

Member of the European Parliament Strik emphasized the importance of a timely and coordinated response by the European Union (EU) to the concerning developments in BiH.

“I am pleased that the majority of political groups supported my request for a debate in the European Parliament on the situation in BiH. We urgently need a strong and coordinated EU response to these concerning events. Now is the right time to impose sanctions on Milorad Dodik for his recent illegal actions, either within the EU framework or through a coalition of willing states,” Strik stated.

It should be recalled that Dodik recently signed laws attempting to ban the operation of state judicial institutions, including the Court and Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA), and the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (HJPC) of BiH on the territory of Republika Srpska (RS). These laws were adopted on February 27th at a special session of the National Assembly of RS (NARS) and published in the Official Gazette of RS. However, the Constitutional Court of BiH decided last week to temporarily suspend them, which triggered a strong reaction from Dodik, according to Klix.ba.

His actions have been condemned by numerous European countries, the United States (U.S.), and domestic legal experts, who have assessed them as a direct attack on the constitutional order of BiH.
