Final Verdict to Radovan Karadzic to be pronounced in December

The International Tribunal in The Hague is planning to pronounce the final verdict to the former President of the RS Radovan Karadzic in December this year.

According to the first instance verdict of the Hague Tribunal, to which appealed both the Defense and prosecutors of the Hague, Karadzic was sentenced to 40 years in prison for committing genocide in Srebrenica, persecution of Bosniaks and Croats all over BiH, terrorizing the people of Sarajevo and taking members of UNPROFOR as hostage.

The Trial Chamber acquitted Karadzic of charges for genocide in seven other municipalities in BiH.

Karadzic requested for the first-instance verdict to be annulled due to procedural mistakes and wrongly established facts and he requested for the trial to be conducted again. Prosecutors requested for Karadzic to be sentenced for genocide in 1992 and to be convicted on life imprisonment.

Yesterday in the court, Karadzic said that he “feels good” because his “health condition is improved, especially regarding his spinal cord”.

He thanked Judge Meron for allowing him to have a laptop, which is why he does not need to be in the “unnatural position” while sitting and working with desktop computer.

Karadzic has been detained in Scheveningen prison from July 30, 2008. He was arrested in Serbia on July 21, whose authorities extradited him to The Hague. The Hague Tribunal filed the first indictment against Karadzic in November 1995.
