Cyclists, members of the Association Giro di Sarajevo, were cycling 130 kilometers from Sarajevo to Mostar with the aim of supporting the development of recreational cycling in BiH and promoting the first covered bike parking in Mostar, which was officially opened yesterday in the campus of the University of Mostar. These cyclists met with local cyclists from the Cycling Club Mostar in Jablanica, together they cycled through the city and ended their journey at the newly opened parking.

“We took off from Sarajevo this morning and decided to cycle from Sarajevo, over the Ivan mountain pass, via Konjic and Jablanica, through the breathtaking Neretva Canyon, and eventually we arrived to Mostar. We did not exaggerate with speed. We enjoyed nature and the weather was also favorable,” said Tarik Imamagić from Giro di Sarajevo, the association that is also the initiator of the project of construction of the first covered bike parking in Mostar.

“We are happy because we supported the Giro cyclists who cycled from Sarajevo. We appreciate this initiative and hope that recreational cycling will come to life in Mostar,” said the trainer in the Cycling Club Mostar Dragutin Bošnjak.

Author of the conceptual design and associate for infrastructure in the Association Giro di Sarajevo, who designed the parking with his team, Damir Margeta emphasized that characteristics of the parking are 10 slots for bikes, with a roof that protects the bikes from unfavorable weather conditions. “There are also the so-called A-stands, which are the best solution for disposal of bikes in public. Advantage of these stands, in comparison with the U-stands, is easier disposal of children and women bikes. There is also a security label which contains a simple, but useful guide for cyclists on measures of protection, such as proper locking modes and application of adequate locks,” Margeta explained.

As the first covered bike parking in Mostar, this facility represents a step forward in the development of cycling infrastructure of this city, which is very favorable for development of urban biking. Bike parking should represent a model for further construction of bike parking capacities and it can be replicated on many other locations in the city. Primarily, it will be at service for students and staff of all faculties of the University of Mostar. “We sincerely thank the initiators of the construction of the bike parking and all those who contributed to the implementation of this significant project. Special thanks go to the Association Giro di Sarajevo and the company Lactalis BH, who financed the construction. Student Council of the University of Mostar is proud of being the local partner of this project. This is one great stimulus for everyone, especially for students, to lead a healthy life and use bikes as means of transportation,” stated the President of the Student Council of the University of Mostar Janja Marušić.

Representatives of the company Lactalis BH were also present at the opening of the bike parking in Mostar. “After Banja Luka, where we opened the same facility for local students last week, we are happy to do the same for students of the University of Mostar today and I hope that students and professors will actively use the parking,” stated Haris Kadenić, Head of Marketing in the company Lactalis BH, announcing the construction of the same bike parking in another three cities in BiH.
