First robotic-assisted Surgeries successfully performed at KCUS

The robotic system that was installed at the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS) for the purpose of training surgeons was used not only by experienced surgeons but also by all younger surgeons for whom this type of training is very important in their development in this noble skill. Through a month of daily training of urologists, abdominal, thoracic and cardiac surgeons, as well as gynecologists, they gained significant experience in this type of surgical technique.

In addition, the first symposium on this specific surgical technique was successfully organized at the KCUS, where the robotic system for minimally invasive surgery was presented. On that occasion, for the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in Montenegro and Serbia, one urological and one abdominal surgical operation were performed under the supervision of the world’s leading experts in this type of surgery, Prof. Dr. Alexandre Mottrie and Dr. Jan Colpaert.

Prim. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alen Pilav, General Director of KCUS, said that KCUS will continue to provide its employees with support in every form of education and training.

“A robot is not a replacement for a surgeon, but a modern tool that enables greater surgical precision, less invasiveness, fewer intraoperative and postoperative complications, shorter postoperative recovery and shorter hospitalization of patients. KCUS has the capacity and experts to introduce modern treatment methods when funds are invested in equipment, education and improvement of the health system, and not accumulated in accounts,” said Pilav.

The team of the KCUS Urology and Organ Transplantation Clinic, led by the Head of the Clinic, Prof. Dr. Benjamin Kulovac, was certified at the Robotic Surgery Education Center in Istanbul after successful training. Based on the successfully completed training and the certificate obtained, this team successfully performed the first independent robot-assisted laparoscopic urological surgeries. All patients operated on during this period were discharged home shortly after the operation without complications, which is one of the greatest advantages of this technique.

“As a university hospital, KCUS must be a leader in the development of modern medicine, provide opportunities for education and practical training of staff, and provide patients with modern treatment methods used in leading world health centers. Given that our doctors are top-notch and experienced surgeons, they have very quickly become qualified to perform robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgical procedures,” said the Director of Surgical Disciplines at KCUS, Prof. Dr. Nermin Granov.

Prof. Dr. Kulovac stated that opportunities for education in minimally invasive surgery are an additional incentive for all doctors and medical workers.

“The future of a large part of surgery lies in such technological improvements, especially in urological surgery where robotic-assisted surgery has found its greatest application. With this, we have shown that our doctors are ready for the most difficult challenges and the most technologically advanced surgical procedures,” said Kulovac, according to a statement from KCUS.
