Five hundred People commit Suicide in BiH Annually

Some 500 people commit suicide in Bosnia and Herzegovina annually and the most common “trigger” is poverty and unemployment. Zenica-Doboj and Canton Sarajevo have reported most cases of suicide since the beginning of this year, according to BHT journalist research.

According to the data of the Federal Police Administration, in the first five months of this year there were 76 cases of suicide in the Federation of BiH. Looking at the sex structure, suicide was committed by 59 men and 17 women. On the other hand, according to the Republika Srpska Ministry of Interior, 91 people committed suicide since the beginning of the year.

“In the background of all these suicides lies a state of depression – about 80 percent, five to fifteen percent abuse of psychoactive substances, which is also present in adolescents and, very rarely, only some ten percent of different mental problems or disorders”, says Irina Rizvan, head of the project “Mental Health in BiH”.

Each suicide case has a history of the problem, and each accompanies psychopathy syndrome and depression syndrome. Also, feeling of guilt, reducing verbal communication with the environment are some of the symptoms that the environment can affect. Cedomir Novakovic, a psychologist, says it happens to be in a large number of people in post-war or environments that are often exposed to various natural disasters, psychological resistance or psychological stability in decline.

“It is expected that the number of suicide cases will increase in such environments and such situations,” Novakovic said, News Agency Patria reports.
